Women’s Football & LGBTQ+ Inclusion: The Controversy

The “Libaloon” website shed light on the scenes of women’s football, especially the unspoken reality that has disturbing dimensions, and is represented by unacceptable practices and behaviors among some female players. Where it was previously considered a sensitive or prohibited topic, today it is dealt with within some clubs and technical teams with a kind of habit, in an attempt to impose coexistence with it within the groups.

The website revealed that its own sources reported that some female players were now forced to be accompanied by close friends during transfer periods, official transfers, and even to places of residence such as rooms and hotels.

Nahila, a pseudonym for one of the players, says that the problem is not limited to the tendencies themselves, but rather in the internal dealing with them and the attempt to normalize them with the support or silence of some officials, stressing that these relationships have begun to negatively affect the course of women’s football, and impose choices and behaviors that make the atmosphere of training, matches, and travel more complicated.

For his part, (Rashid), a pseudonym for a women’s soccer coach, acknowledged in a statement to the “Labalone” website that this phenomenon exists repeatedly, noting that the technical frameworks are trying to intervene to maintain the group’s cohesion and stability.

He added with regret that dealing with these behaviors has often become as if it were a normal matter, instead of setting clear controls that ensure discipline and protect moral and sporting values.

The most dangerous problem, according to the speakers, remains not in the presence of certain tendencies, but in the path that transforms unacceptable behaviors into acceptable practices within teams, which threatens to normalize chaos and undermine the foundations of moral and sporting discipline.

In the context of a society like Morocco, where law and religion reject these practices, the phenomenon takes on greater sensitivity. Silence or leniency on the part of officials may open the door to moral imbalances and hinder the development of women’s football. The real challenge does not lie in monitoring the phenomenon, but in preventing its normalization within a space that is supposed to be governed by the values of discipline, respect, and sporting ethics.

Clubs and technical frameworks also remain required to bear their full responsibility, by setting clear and strict limits, in order to preserve the ethics of sports and society.
