When tennis player Roger Federer won his fourth Wimbledon title in 2006, he took with him the trophy along with the traditional green-violet towel used at the championships. Then Federer had said, ‘I have been carrying these towels with me. Now I have a big collection of these. This is a nice gift.

After this came the year 2009. Federer is wiping his sweat with a towel amidst the applause of thousands of spectators in the center court of Wimbledon in London. But this time, this terry towel made of 100% cotton has reached their hands not from anywhere else but directly from Welspun’s factory in Vapi, Gujarat, where many varieties of cotton are loaded in trucks and ships from all over the world, come under one roof and then bounce in big machines and come out as long threads. Bedsheets and towels are then made from this fabric.

Journey from Vapi to Wimbledon

Welspun World is one of the largest business groups in India, which exports everything from bedsheets to water tanks. The special thing is that in 2006, Welspun had purchased the British premium towel manufacturing company Christie, which had been making exclusively Wibledon towels since 1987. Today, the same towels are being manufactured at Welspun’s Vapi plant for the last 17 years. DCH is manufactured at Welspun’s plant in Anjar, Kutch, about 650 km from Vapi.

Wimbledon towels price and preparation time

The company has saved Federer’s autographed towel. Assistant General Manager at the plant, Mitesh Modi, says that the company sources different varieties of cotton from countries like America, Egypt and Israel and products of different quality are prepared from them. According to Major (retd) Roshan, head of the administrative department of the Cotton Seed Variety Company of India at the Towel Vapi plant in Wimbledon, ‘Wimbledon towels, which cost around Rs 1800 to Rs 2000 in the Indian markets, start being made a few months before the tournament.’

Classic colors, special design and players’ choice

Players use these towels to wipe sweat during matches. Wimbledon also releases a seasonally themed towel every year, in addition to its classic green-violet color. The specialty of their towels is that apart from being soft, they also dry very quickly. Every player gets two towels on the court, but many players like Novak Djokovic, Iga Svitek admit that they cannot stop themselves from taking them with them.
