Kai Wagner could leave the MLS after seven years and move to England. According to a Sky report, Birmingham City are activating the €2.3 million purchase option for the Philadelphia Union midfielder. Wagner moved from the Würzburger Kickers to Philadelphia Union in February 2019, where he has since made 201 appearances in the MLS. After Fabian Herbers, who played 218 times in the North American league, he is the German with the most games. Wagner’s contract runs until the end of 2026 and with a market value of 5 million euros, the left-back is one of the most valuable Germans in the MLS.

After Phil Neumann and Marvin Ducksch, who strengthened Birmingham in the summer, Wagner would be the third German in the squad. The €2.3m release clause would make him the Blues’ most expensive transfer this season after Kyogo Furuhashi, who paid €9m to Stade Rennes. This would make him more expensive than Ducksch, for whom 2 million euros were transferred to Werder Bremen. The second division newcomer wants to return to the Premier League after 15 years, but after 24 match days the gap to the playoff places is seven points (to the table).
