Joey Veerman has nothing good to say about referee Daniel Siebert after PSV’s painful defeat at Newcastle United (3-0). According to the midfielder, the German referee made a huge mistake during a much-discussed foul by Bruno Guimarães, which in the eyes of Veerman should never have been dismissed with just a yellow card.
The explanation that Siebert later gave on the field completely went down the wrong way with the PSV player. The decisive moment took place after 26 minutes of play, when PSV was already 1-0 behind. Veerman was left screaming after Guimarães, shortly after kicking the ball, landed with his studs full on the Volendammer’s ankle. To the surprise of many PSV players, Siebert only drew a yellow card, while there were immediate violent protests and many analysts also felt that red was inevitable.
After the final whistle, Veerman appeared visibly shaken in front of the camera Ziggo Sports. When Noa Vahle asked how his foot was doing, he replied: “Stiff, it hurts, so it will last a while.”
When Vahle then inquired about the referee’s explanation, Veerman is clearly annoyed: “Really scandalous. He hit the ball first, he said. So that’s why it wasn’t a red card. But if this isn’t red, then that’s it.”
According to the international, Siebert’s lecture is completely out of line with what actually happened on the field. Veerman explains why he considers the action extremely dangerous:
“Why is it red? He puts his foot fully over the ball and comes full force with his studs under my shin guards above my ankle. If things go wrong, you will break your leg. I think I was lucky.”
The violation and the lack of a red card ensure that the match in England will be discussed later, especially from a PSV perspective. For Veerman, the frustration that predominates is that, in his opinion, a potentially serious injury was not appreciated by the arbitration.
After this moment, Veerman and his teammates suffered a hopeless defeat on a visit to Newcastle. They lost 3-0 and coach Peter Bosz saw several players fall injured.
