Trump & Greenland: Alliance & Vox’s Silence

BarcelonaDonald Trump’s claim to annex Greenland to the United States (USA) has caught Europe on the back foot, which did not expect the American president to go so far. He has also caught up with the Catalan and Spanish extreme right, who have remained silent, although until now they had publicly taken a position in favor of the leader of the Republican Party in all the international conflicts he has promoted or in which he has been immersed in his second term. Both Aliança Catalana and Vox did not hesitate to defend the US intervention in Venezuela, which ended with the arrest of its president, Nicolás Maduro. They have also endorsed Trump’s plans for Palestine, after unabashedly defending the genocide in Gaza. And these last few days, in full revolt in Iran, both formations have supported a future intervention by the US to end the Islamic republic. The president of the Catalan Alliance, Sílvia Orriols, urged him to repeat in Iran the operation against the successor of Hugo Chávez. “Trump is already taking too long to capture Ayatollahs…”, he said on social networks.

On the other hand, with the Inuit, Aliança and Vox have opted for silence. No publication on the networks or any statement from the two parties, despite the fact that Trump has gone so far as to affirm that he does not rule out military or economic force to gain control of the island. The dozens of tweets made by the main leaders of Alliance in reference to Venezuela, Israel and Iran contrast with the absence of messages about Greenland. To questions from the ARA, party sources have avoided getting wet and have limited themselves to answering that “at the moment it’s all words and not deeds” from Trump, without answering if they think his desire to stay with this autonomous territory of Denmark is good. “Defending the sovereignty of countries implies recognizing the democratic results”, the Alliance stated in a statement in relation to the intervention in Venezuela, endorsing the electoral fraud denounced by the opposition. In any case, in Greenland, there are a majority of parties that defend the full sovereignty of the island and the only one that wanted to be annexed to the United States was left out of Parliament, as was reflected in the elections that took place in March, just after Trump became president again and reiterated that he wanted to buy the island.

Greenland is also an uncomfortable subject for Vox, as were Trump’s previously announced tariffs against European Union countries. From this it is understood that they have not spoken about Trump’s threats to the sovereignty of the island that is part of Denmark, despite the many questions received. The last, on Thursday, when the general secretary of the party in Catalonia, Ignacio Garriga, chose not to answer: “Today our Davos and Greenland are the trains, the dead in Andalusia and Gelida and all the injured by a criminal management of the government,” he said. And, in the same vein, last week the state spokesman, José Antonio Fúster, stressed that Greenland is not Vox’s “competence”. Fúster added that it’s important “what Trump does,” “not what he says,” and that you don’t need “an opinion on everything in this life.”

The inconsistencies with the allies

The formal argument is that they are focused on the alleged corruption of Pedro Sánchez and the problems of the people, which is what Abascal also appealed to a week ago: “Our Greenland is Mercosur, the green pact, the problems of farmers, insecurity in the streets and our own interests, but we have the scum of the press at the service of the corrupt regime of bipartisanship talking about very distant problems,” he said from Fraga. Sources from the formation comment that they are aware that the rest of the parties will bully them with the “inconsistencies” of their international allies, but they also point to the “unpredictability” of Trump, who “points in many directions because he often wants to achieve something else”. In fact, the pre-agreement announced on Greenland in the defense of the Arctic in which Denmark assures that Danish sovereignty is not compromised may turn the tide and Vox may make a statement about it, predict the consulted sources.

On the other hand, from Vox they remember that they have already encountered other allies, not only with Trump, as is the case of the French Marine Le Pen, who was furiously against the action of the US in Venezuela. They have also clashed with her on gay rights and abortion.
