Traoré: Algeria-Burkina Controversy & Punishment

At the end of a closely contested match against Algeria last Sunday, the captain of Burkina Faso, Bertrand Traoré, strongly criticized the refereeing during his heated reaction. Visibly frustrated by the defeat (1-0), the player rejected the responsibility for the result on the refereeing body.

“We lost 1-0 on a penalty. And I think that in the first action of the match, there is certainly a penalty. The referee didn’t even check. We tell him: “there is no penalty”. And as luck would have it, he stays on the ground and confirms it. »said Traore after the final whistle of the match lost against Algeria (0-1).

But it was above all the rest of his remarks which provoked a strong reaction. Out of it, the player Sunderland continued: “It’s a shame for African football. The CAN, there are beautiful stadiums, supporters, everything is beautiful… The referees ****** the match. And at the end, the referee pushes me. It’s disappointing. »

Statements considered excessive, especially since the images of the match show that the Ghanaian referee Daniel Laryea did not commit a manifest error regarding the disputed action.

Sanctioned by CAF

Three days later, the sentence fell. There Burkina Faso Football Federation announced in a press release that Bertrand Traoré had been interviewed, apologized, but was still fined $10,000. His remarks were considered offensive by the Confederation of African Football.
