The Atlanta Hawks have parted ways with their franchise face. Trae Young is leaving the team after more than seven years.
According to ESPN, there will be the next big trade in the NBA. Trae Young, who was the figurehead of the Atlanta Hawks for many years, is expected to be traded to the Washington Wizards.
In return, the Hawks will receive CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert as well as significantly more flexibility in the salary structure. The trade would also end a collaboration that lasted more than seven years.
A separation was foreseeable as the 27-year-old’s contract had not been extended by the franchise. Since then, his agent and the franchise have reportedly tried to negotiate a trade. With the Wizards in the US capital, it has probably even become Young’s preferred stop.
Historically strong numbers from Young
The four-time All-Star was selected by the Mavericks in the 2018 NBA draft, but was traded directly to Atlanta for Luka Doncic and a protected first-round pick. So far he has only played for the Hawks.
During that time, he averaged 25.2 points and 9.8 assists. Last season he led the league with 11.6 assists per game. In total, he played 520 games for the Hawks. They only reached the playoffs three times.
In the contract that he brings to Washington he is still entitled to $95 million. This expires in 2027, although there is an option on the player side for an extension.
