Young’s representatives and Hawks general manager Onsi Saleh have had positive and collaborative conversations over the past week to find a solution, according to the same sources.

The Hawks and Young’s agents have been in dialogue about his future for the past several months, since the franchise decided not to offer a contract extension to the 27-year-old point guard. Young has this season and next, with a contract worth $95 million in total, and a player option for next offseason.

Young has been the star of the Hawks since he was selected in the 2018 draft and is the team’s all-time leader in three-pointers and assists. He has led Atlanta to the playoffs three times during his eight years with the team, including an appearance in the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021.

But the Hawks appear ready to begin a new era with the emergence of forward Jalen Johnson, who is averaging 24 points, 10.2 rebounds and 8.5 assists, and the acquisition of free agent Nickeil Alexander-Walker, who is averaging a career-high 20.7 points.

Young has suffered leg injuries this season that have limited him to just 10 games. In the 27 games he has missed, the Hawks are 15-12, compared to 2-8 when he plays, and are allowing nearly 10 fewer points per game to opponents, according to ESPN Research.

Young, who sprained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee early in the season and has dealt with residual pain from the injury, is currently sidelined with a right quadriceps contusion that has kept him out of the last five games.

An All-NBA selection in the 2021-22 season, Young has career averages of 25.2 points and 9.8 assists. He led the league in assists last season with 11.6 per game.
