When we think of football, they immediately come to mind bones and teeth. Ed is true: about 99% of the calcium in our body is found there.
But the remaining 1% is critical to vital functions: nerve transmission, muscle contraction, blood clotting and heart rate.
Total football is a simple, but fundamental test that can provide useful information on different clinical conditions, from bone metabolism to hormonal and renal disorders.
🧪 What is “total football”?
Total serum calcium measures the overall amount of calcium in the blood, including the two main forms:
- Protein-bound calcium (especially albumin)
- Ionized calcium, which is the “active” fraction from a biological point of view
In some cases, if the total calcium is abnormal, it is useful to investigate further with the dosage of ionized calcium or with the examination ofalbumin, to evaluate the real balance.
📉 When calcium is too low (hypocalcemia)
I more common symptoms can be:
- Muscle cramps, tingling, spasms
- Weakness, chronic fatigue
- Fragile bones, weak nails and hair
- Mental confusion or anxiety
Hypocalcemia may be linked to:
- Deficiency di vitamin D
- Dysfunctions parathyroid
- Intestinal malabsorption or kidney disorders
- Side effects of some drugs
📈 When it is too high (hypercalcemia)
It can give quieter symptoms, but sometimes includes:
- Nausea, constipation, dehydration
- Abdominal pain
- Sense of confusion or fatigue
- Cardiac arrhythmias
The most common causes include:
- Iperparathyroidism
- Excess vitamin D or calcium in the diet
- Some neoplasms or endocrine conditions
- Chronic kidney problems
🩺 When is it useful to check blood calcium?
- In case of persistent tiredness, cramps, bone fragility
- In subjects with renal or hormonal pathologies
- In those who take calcium or vitamin D supplements
- During oncological treatment courses
- In menopausal women or at risk of osteoporosis
- In the presence of TSH alterations or bone metabolism
