Germany starts the Handball World Cup with a win against Austria. Circulator Tobias Wagner is particularly noticeable among opponents because of his impressive stature. Before the games, the 128-pound colossus has an eating ritual.
The German national handball team wins its opening game 30:27 against Austria and celebrates a successful start to the European Championship. Captain Johannes Golla with seven goals and goalkeeper Andreas Wolff with many strong saves were the guarantees for the victory.
An impressive figure kept appearing in front of Wolff – Austria’s pivot Tobias Wagner. At 1.98 meters, the 30-year-old weighs an impressive 128 kilograms. Since he often cannot keep up with the high tempo, Wagner is usually only used in attack. Against Germany, the Austrians repeatedly took the goalkeeper off the field in favor of a seventh player.
Wagner then always positioned himself at the circle. There he is a real beast who is difficult to defend because of his massive figure. However, Wagner only scored two goals against Germany and was repeatedly denied by the outstanding Wolff.
Wagner played in the Bundesliga for the first time in 2016 with Balingen-Weilstetten before returning home. In 2024 he moved back to Erlangen in Germany, which he left after one season. He is currently playing in France for LH Limoges.

“Tobias is a physically very strong and yet agile player who has already proven his skills several times nationally and internationally,” said Erlangen’s then coach Johannes Sellin about Wagner, who only revealed one thing about his eating habits: “I always eat spaghetti Bolognese on match day.”

The cyclist still has a big sporting dream – taking part in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles: “At the age of 33, you should then think about retiring. And luckily I’ve already been able to experience everything else in handball.”
