– It is a long-awaited announcement for the entire freeski community. Jesper and Henrik are two giants who are now starting to find their way back to their top form, and it will be incredibly exciting to see what they can achieve in the coming games. The fact that they are also joined by Martin feels just right – together they form a strong trio that represents Swedish freeski at the Olympics, says Stefan Karlsson, sports director of freeski at the Swedish Ski Association.
Jesper Tjäder, Östersund-Frösö SLK, and Henrik Harlaut, Åre SLK, are both seasoned championship skiers who fought back this season after long periods of injury. At the Olympic Games in Beijing 2022, they each picked up a bronze medal – Jesper in slopestyle and Henrik in big air.
Due to injuries, they have had few competitions to deliver and the pressure on the two stars has been great. But now it is clear that all the hard work has paid off and they are ready to defend their medals in Italy.
– They are charged on the exception criterion. We have a writing in our selection documents that allows us to select athletes with proven high capacity, but who due to injury problems did not have enough opportunity to prove it during this qualification period, says Fredrik Joulamo, SOK’s sports director.
Martin Nordqvist makes his Olympic debut
Martin Nordqvist, Riksgränsen snowboard and ski club, has had a strong start to the season with, among other things, personal bests in big air. The 22-year-old from Kiruna has also shown stability and now gets the chance to run his first Olympics.
– Martin is taken out on the future criterion. A promise that was twelfth best in the World Cup this winter, says Fredrik Joulamo.
The Winter Olympics begin at the beginning of February and the freeski competitions are decided in Livigno Snow Park, where the Swedish skiers have a chance of a medal in both big air and slopestyle.
