Thibau Nys can now look back on a successful cross winter, still his first and great love. But still a drastic choice is forced in the future.

Cross has to give way
Maxime Monfort, team leader at Lidl-Trek, is clear about this. Nys will eventually follow a calendar similar to what Van der Poel and Van Aert have been doing for several years now. “Thibau will sooner or later adopt a calendar like Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert,” he says clearly at Sudinfo.
According to Monfort, Nys will also enter the field much later, and will therefore ride far fewer races. “He won’t resume racing until December because a full winter takes away a lot from him on the road.” This way, Nys can make optimal use of his road season.
That planning still needs to be worked out and will be done together with father Nys, says Monfort. “The collaboration is simple,” he says.

A difficult year
The road season will therefore become increasingly important for Nys, especially for Lidl-Trek. The past road season – including a poorer Tour de France – was difficult for Nys. “But there are extenuating circumstances,” Monfort tempers.
He refers to the illness that Nys contracted towards the end of the Baloise Belgium Tour, which also affected his preparation for the Tour. To make matters worse, he crashed there again in the opening stage. “But all this has taught him a lot,” Monfort concludes.
