Texas Tech has signed Stephanie Okechukwu, who at 2.15 meters tall is the tallest player in women’s college basketball history if the NCAA approves her eligibility.
The school officially announced the hiring on Friday, two days after Red Raiders head coach Krista Gerlich published a cryptic post on The school also posted a photo of the center, who reportedly has a 7-foot wingspan, holding two basketballs in the palm of his hand on the program’s website.
In an Instagram Reel that could instill fear in future Texas Tech rivals, Okechukwu appears effortlessly dunking and almost without leaving the court. He has a deft touch on the ball, passing and rebounding.
Until Okechukwu receives official approval from the NCAA, the tallest players in women’s college basketball today are 6-foot-10 centers Nicole Dominguez of Middle Tennessee State and Abbie Boutilier of Eastern Illinois. Okechukwu has never played in the WNBA or at any NCAA level.
Okechukwu would join a Texas Tech team with a 15-0 record and ranked 21st in the country. Point guards Snudda Collins, Bailey Maupin and Jalynn Bristow average over 14 points.
Adding a 7-foot-3 player to the paint could bolster a defense that is already one of the best in the country. The Red Raiders rank fifth in opposing field goal percentage (31.7%) and 10th in points allowed per game (52.3).
