Ter Stegen to Girona: Barcelona Goalkeeper Transfer News

The move of national soccer goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen from FC Barcelona to FC Girona is perfect. Coach Hansi Flick confirmed this on Tuesday evening. “This morning Marc said that he was going to Girona,” said the 60-year-old before the premier class duel at Slavia Prague.

Ter Stegen, who lost his regular place at the leaders of the Spanish Primera División, is joining the league rivals until the end of the season in order to increase his chances of playing at the World Cup in the summer in the USA, Canada and Mexico (June 11th to July 19th). “I think Marc is a fantastic goalkeeper. We made a different decision for the future of the club and I think that was the right decision,” said Flick: “But I wish him all the best because he is a fantastic goalkeeper and maybe we will see him in the German national team at the World Cup. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for him for that. I think he has a good chance.”

Late in the evening, Barcelona confirmed a loan until June; according to media reports, Ter Stegen’s new club is said to be taking on 25 percent of the top earner’s salary. The transfer had been in the making for weeks. Ter Stegen moved from Mönchengladbach to Barcelona in 2014 and became a great support and captain for the Catalans since 2024. In 423 games he only conceded 416 goals. A serious knee injury and back surgery set him back.
