GironaWhen you least expected it, Girona escaped defeat with an epic goal from Vitor Reis in added time. Getafe had taken Montilivi out of the ring, angry with the referee’s decisions, the rival and the world. Thanks to the appearance of the centre-back, who courageously finished off a ball that extends the unbeaten run of the Girona side this 2026, and of Ter Stegen, who avoided the 1-2 in the last action. The descent continues far away, at four points.
All eyes went to the new signings, especially the figure of the German under the posts. They hallucinate Montilivi: everyone was taking pictures of him and pointing at him, saying “yes, it’s him, it’s Ter Stegen”. He was very comfortable, the goalkeeper, who did not complicate life with the ball at his feet and even ventured to start some offensive play, like an assist in the purest style quarterbarck to Bryan Gil, who was about to hook Vanat. His presence, alone, gave extra security and hierarchy. Gazzaniga, resigned, also watched him from the bench. “What a remedy,” he seemed to think. He had no fault, in the goal, and saved one on the limit of time.
Fran Beltrán also did not miss a beat in a Girona that danced to his rhythm. He is intense, the midfielder, who was also seen making changes of orientation, a resource that Míchel had lost with the farewells of Aleix Garcia and, more recently, with Arthur. The Girona team, boosted by recent results, didn’t play a bad game, but it was like banging your head against the wall every time. In the wall of Bordalás, you can’t knock it down with anything. The third debutant, Echeverri, entered with a disadvantage to try to shake up what was being seen, but it did not go beyond good intentions.
Arbitration desperation
The closest to scoring at the start was Lemar, with a shot that rattled the crossbar in the first half. All the real danger was there, in fact, like a shot from Vitor Reis that sent Soria flying. But it was difficult for Girona and, the more the game progressed, the more frustrated the competition became, with the help of Alejandro Quintero, a referee completely unable to apply some common sense to the numerous fouls and waste of time by the visitors. There came a point where he was speeding up unnecessarily, as if every play was the final one. Getafe, patient, was starting to have the broth on fire that it wanted.
And in an absurd recovery and four touches, the Madrid team wove the perfect strategy, taken advantage of by Vázquez, who finished off Ter Stegen’s cross. Then of course there was confusion, because Girona hadn’t been behind anyone for days. Until Vitor Reis appeared, from who knows where, to give a very good point, fueled by the decisive subsequent save of the German goalkeeper. Montilivi ended up singing “Referee, how bad you are!”, because he had a disastrous performance.
