Jam. The German Youth Badminton Championships took place in Hoyerswerda, Saxony, from December 19th to 21st. Nola Bayerlein from TSV Westerland, who competed in the U15 age group, was also there. Qualifying for this tournament meant a great success for the 14-year-old and the fulfillment of a season goal she had set for herself.
With her third place at the North German Championships, the reigning state champion from Schleswig-Holstein secured the starting place at the national level. This was made possible through great ambition, hard work and willpower. Due to several failures in the starting field, Nola was even allowed to compete in all three disciplines.
The mixed doubles started on Friday. Together with her partner Taiken Egbers from Lower Saxony, she showed a decent performance, but had to admit defeat to a pairing from Baden-Württemberg.
In the individual that followed, Nola made a sporting statement. In her flagship discipline, she won her first match at national level against an opponent from Bavaria with 21:16 and 23:21. The success caused great joy – also for national coach Ole Bugislaus and her home coach Torsten Lickfers from TSV Westerland. In the round of 16, Nola met eventual third-placed Mira Sun on Saturday morning. After a 12:21 in the first set, she improved significantly and was leading 18:15 in the second round. In the end, however, the last points were missing and the set was lost 18:21. Despite the defeat, pride prevailed over a strong performance against a top German player. In the women’s doubles the chances were limited due to a minor injury to her partner. Nola then began the long journey home to Sylt. The long journeys continue to pose a challenge for Sylt’s badminton talents. Nola’s brother Lukas had also qualified for the German Championships in the U13 age group, but was unable to take part due to his doubles partner’s cancellation at short notice.
The achievements of the Bayerlein siblings are particularly highly valued, especially given their geographical peripheral location. Being able to compete at national level is a remarkable success and a strong sign for young talent on Sylt.
