Sports Gala Prep: Wednesday Edition

When? This year’s Sports Gala is arranged on Wednesday, January 21. Normally, the Sports Gala is arranged on a Monday, so this will be the first time that it is on a Wednesday. There are two reasons for the change of day. One is that SVT broadcast the Guldbaggegala on Monday evening, the other is that the arena was fully booked every Monday in January.

Our? After the last two years have been at the Strawberry arena, the gala is now once again back in the Avicii arena.

The battle for the Jerring Prize

In November, the 13 candidates for the Jerring Prize were presented. When the gala begins, there are eight candidates left. The eight are: Andreas Almgren, athletics, Ebba Andersson, skiing, Armand Duplantis, athletics, Mjällby AIF, soccer, Truls Möregårdh, table tennis, Jenny Rissveds, mountain bike, Daniel Ståhl, athletics, Jonna Sundling, skiing.

Last year the final battle was between Truls Möregårdh and Armand Duplantis. That time it was Möregårdh who received the most votes. The question is whether they will settle for the prize again this year or whether any of the other six candidates can challenge them.

Worth noting is that it is the first time in 21 years that a domestic club team, SM gold winners Mjällby, is among the nominees.

This is how the winners are chosen:

The Swedish Academy of Sports’ nomination jury, which consists of eleven people and the chairman Lasse Granqvist, meets in the first week of November.

The nomination period extends from the first of November to the last of October of the following year.

Prior to the jury meeting, the Swedish Sports Confederation’s special sports federations have been given the opportunity to submit proposals for nominations. The jury nominates four candidates in each category.

Ballots with all nominations are then sent to the Sports Academy’s roughly 300 members. The result of the Academy’s vote is what determines who is awarded the prize.

Other prizes awarded:

Svenska Dagbladet’s Medal of Achievement (awarded in December to the beach volleyball pair David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig), the Judge’s Award (Taib Sisic), the Pepper of the Year and the Sports Mirror Award.

In addition, the Swedish Sports Academy’s Honorary Award will be awarded. Who gets it won’t be revealed until the gala.
