It was already in the air, but the white smoke is there. Kento Shiogai exchanges NEC for VfL Wolfsburg. The Japanese striker is the second most expensive outgoing transfer for NEC ever.
Shiogai’s contract ran until 2028. That contract contained a buyout clause of ten million. That clause is lifted by the German club, causing NEC to lose its top scorer.
“This is a transfer that we have mixed feelings about,” says Carlos Aalbers in a press release. “We are doing something great on the field and we have our ambitions. On the other hand, we are very proud that after the successful transfer summer we have once again seen confirmation that we are creating value. For players from abroad and in particular Japan, this proves that NEC can serve as an ideal intermediate step on the road to the top of Europe. Through this I would like to express my appreciation to everyone who has been involved in the development of Kento over the past 1.5 years. From scouting to staff, and in particular our players Kodai Sano and Koki Ogawa, who were there for Kento from day one and played an important role in his journey at NEC.”
