Senegal is the first quarter-finalist of the Africa Cup. The Lions of Teranga fell behind against Sudan in Tangier, but turned the game around and won 3-1.
In the quarter-finals, Senegal will meet the winner of Mali or Tunisia, the Dutch team’s opponent at the upcoming World Cup. That match will start at 9 p.m.
Star player Sadio Mané was in the starting line-up for one-time African Cup winner Senegal. Kalidou Koulibaly, former Napoli and Chelsea defender, was missing due to suspension.
Perhaps that is why Senegal was surprised after a few minutes of play. A nice turning shot from Aamir Abdallah flew into the far top corner.
With this, Sudan once again asserted itself well. The national team of the war-plagued country qualified for the African Cup of Nations at the expense of Ghana and survived the group stage with a victory over Equatorial Guinea.
But after that excellent start, Sudan found it increasingly difficult. Senegal increased the pressure and leveled through Villarreal midfielder Pape Gueye. The same Gueye gave his team the lead before half time.
In the hard-working Sudan, the forces drained away after the break. Ibrahim Mbaye, a top talent from PSG, took advantage of this and set the final score at 3-1.
