Seahawks Sale: Ownership Change After Super Bowl?

Everything indicates that the Seattle Seahawks will be put up for sale after Super Bowl LX.

The information was revealed by ESPN.

This transaction would end years of uncertainty over when the team would be purchased following the death of its former owner, Paul G. Allen, in 2018.

The Seahawks and the Portland Trail Blazers (NBA) have belonged to the estate of Paul G. Allen since the death of the latter, co-founder of Microsoft, in 2018 from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. His sister, Jody Allen, manages the teams as executrix, following her brother’s instructions to sell them and donate the proceeds to charity.

The NFL declined to comment. In a statement, a spokesperson for the estate of Paul G. Allen said the organization does not comment on rumors or speculation and that “the team is not for sale.”

If the Seahawks are put up for sale, it will be the first time since the creation of the Super Bowl that an entire team that played in the Finals has been put on the market so soon after. In February 1991, Preston Robert Tisch acquired 50% of the defending champion New York Giants.

The Seahawks will face the New England Patriots on February 8 in Santa Clara, California.

The value of sports teams has exploded in recent years. According to Sportico’s rankings, the Seahawks are worth $6.59 billion, which places them 14th in the league. The last NFL team to be sold was the Washington Commanders, bought in 2023 by a group led by Josh Harris for the record sum of $6.05 billion. The NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers sold a majority stake in the team last June for a reported $10 billion.

A team executive told ESPN that the Seahawks could sell for between $7 and $8 billion.

The Blazers are in the process of being purchased by a group of investors led by Tom Dundon, who has agreed to acquire the team for more than $4 billion. Dundon already owns the Carolina Hurricanes.
