The Orlando Magic have been linked to Dennis Schröder by an NBA expert. But according to a report, there are at least two other people interested in the DBB captain.
The NBA is rushing towards the trade deadline on February 5th. Dennis Schröder is one of the players who are being discussed particularly hotly these days.
After NBA reporter Evan Sidery wrote on “X” that the Orlando Magic would deal with the professional from the Sacramento Kings, “Bild” now reports that the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Minnesota Timberwolves have also had intensive discussions with the Californians in the past few days.
Both teams are very interested in Schröder, but the Kings’ demand, which means they should demand a first-round pick in return, is too high.
In the report, the Denver Nuggets are given outside chances, but they can hardly manage his high-profile contract without restructuring the squad. It is also said that a deal with the Magic is unrealistic because they do not need another point guard.
Schröder before a change? Magic are apparently looking for a backup
Sidery had written, however, that the team from Florida had asked the Kings about Schröder. Orlando is therefore looking for a backup for point guard Tyus Jones. Schröder is said to have come into the focus of the Magic primarily because of his good chemistry with Franz Wagner.
The fruitful interaction was particularly impressive on the way to the 2023 World Cup title and the European Championship triumph last September. And things also went perfectly for the DBB team up to the semi-finals at the 2024 Olympics, even if they were ultimately denied a medal in Paris.
In Orlando, Schröder would be the fourth German professional, as Moritz Wagner, who has just recovered from a torn cruciate ligament, and Tristan da Silva are also part of the squad. The franchise already has the largest black-red-gold faction in NBA history.
Sidery also tweeted that the Kings were aiming for a “real sellout” by the trade deadline. Domantas Sabonis, Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, Keon Ellis, Malik Monk and Schröder are available for the right price.
Rumors about Schröder: Only backup at Kings
In view of the disappointing season with only twelve wins after 46 games and the penultimate place in the Western Conference, a rebuild is being sought. Schröder had only signed a three-year, $44.4 million contract before the season, but both sides had expected significantly more from the collaboration.
The DBB captain lost his role as a starter after just twelve games and has to give way to the aging superstar Russell Westbrook.
So far, Schröder has scored 12.8 points at a rate of 41.4 percent, grabbed 3.1 rebounds and distributed 5.4 assists. His +/- value is -5.4, so the Kings are conceding 5.4 more points than they score with him on the court.
Even beyond the numbers, things are anything but smooth. The man from Braunschweig was recently suspended for three games by the NBA because he allegedly tried to hit a player. According to rumors, it was superstar Luka Doncic from the Los Angeles Lakers.
In the recent 118:123 defeat at the Cleveland Cavaliers, he also caused a shocking moment when he jumped to defend a long pass shortly before the halftime siren, but in his swing he bumped into a spectator in the front row, who apparently took a painful blow from his elbow. Schröder immediately asked about her well-being.
It was a symbolic scene, because his time with the Kings has been anything but smooth so far. Maybe the Magic can offer him the right way out – or the Cavaliers or Timberwolves.
