On Wednesday, head coach Kellen Moore confirmed that Tyler Shough will be his team’s starting quarterback to begin the 2026 season.
“Tyler did a really good job throughout the whole process. He has become much better,” underlined the Saints pilot, whose comments were notably reported by the ESPN network.
“He took advantage when opportunities presented themselves. We’re excited to have the whole off-season to build.”
It is therefore with Shough that Quebecer Damien Alford will have to create chemistry in the coming months. The wide receiver signed a three-year contract with the Louisiana organization on Tuesday, after playing last season with the Calgary Stampeders.
The 26-year-old quarterback was chosen by the Saints in the second round (40e overall) of the 2025 draft. He was promoted to starter on November 2, for the New Orleans team’s ninth game.
Shough went 5-4-0 as a starter. He completed 67.6% of his passes for 2,384 yards and 10 touchdowns, in addition to being the victim of six interceptions. He also rushed for 186 yards and scored three major runs.
During the 2025 training camp, the rookie lost the competition for the number 1 quarterback position to Spencer Rattler. The club went 1-7 with the latter stationed behind center.
The Saints finished their campaign with a 6-11 record and took last place in the National South Division. They thus missed the playoffs for a fifth year in a row.
