Alfred Finnbogason has found a new challenge. The former striker, who retired as a professional footballer last year, has been immediately appointed as technical director of the Norwegian top club Rosenborg BK, the club reports through official channels.
Finnbogason became known in the Netherlands through his period at SC Heerenveen. The now 36-year-old Icelander made waves with the Frisians between 2012 and 2014, scoring no fewer than 59 times and providing 18 assists in 70 matches.
Finnbogason thus earned a transfer to Real Sociedad, which transferred eight million euros to the Abe Lenstra Stadium. The striker then played for Olympiacos, FC Augsburg, Lyngby BK and Augnablik, among others, where he ended his career.
During his career, Finnbogason studied sports management at Johan Cruijff University, economics and public administration at the University of Akureyri and completed the UEFA Sporting Director Program.
Immediately after his playing career, it gave Finnbogason a job as technical director of Icelandic Breidablik. Now comes a new challenge in Scandinavia, near Rosenborg. That club was considered the top club in Norway for many years, but the last national title dates back to 2018.
“During the process we received a very good impression of Finnbogason, both as a person and of his professional qualifications,” said Managing Director Tore Berdal.
“He will give us what we are looking for and is a leader with a clear and distinct attacking playing style that he brings from his playing career and training in the Netherlands.”
Finnbogason is pleased with his job at Rosenborg, where he has signed until mid-2030. “It is with great humility that I take on the position of technical director at Rosenborg. The club has a fantastic reputation in European football and is known for its attacking, Dutch-inspired playing style.”
“That was one of the reasons why I was asked to apply. During the application process I got a good impression of the club and how together we can bring Rosenborg back to the top of Norwegian and international football.”
“I look forward to working hard in the near future so that Alfred Johansson (Rosenborg coach) and the team have the best possible conditions to perform in 2026,” said Finnbogason.
