Rolland Courbis: Football Legend Dies at 72

A voice of French football has died down. The iconic trainer Rolland Courbis died this Monday at the age of 72. “Coach Courbis” guided the Girondins de Bordeaux, Marseille, Montpellier and Stade Rennais during his career.

“Rolland Courbis passed away last night at five in the morning,” Karim Nedjari, the general director of RMC, announced on RMC. A native of Marseille, Courbis began his career as a defender before moving to the position of coach, standing out for his banter and his sanguine style.

Having played for OM, AC Ajaccio, Olympique Lyonnais and AS Monaco as a player, he then played in the French Championship. Beyond the French first division, the former RMC consultant has also held the reins of the selection of Niger, FC Sion and USM Alger.

His last experience as a main manager dates back to 2016, when he coached Rennes. He then participated in the development of young Ousmane Dembélé, crowned Ballon d’Or a few years later.
