The former major league player Alexei Ramirez is part of Cuba’s preliminary squad for the World Baseball Classic 2026confirmed the journalist Francys Romero in the social media.
Ramírez, 44 years old, has a career spanning nine seasons MLB where he played primarily as a shortstop and second base and stood out for his defensive versatility and offensive contributions.
The Cuban baseball player, who currently plays with the Pinar del Río team in the Serie Nacional, already knows what it means to take part in a World Baseball Classic. In 2006, when he was just 24 years old, he was part of the island’s team in the first World Baseball Classic, held in Puerto Rico. Should his final recording come about, He would return to Puerto Rican soil 20 years later in one of the tournament’s most remarkable stories.
The possible presence of Ramírez in the Cuban squad would bring international experience and leadership to a selection aiming to improve their results after unremarkable performances in recent editions of the competition.
At the moment, the Cuban Baseball Federation has not yet officially announced the final list, but the inclusion of the former major league player in the pre-registration is already raising expectations among fans.
