Joaquim ‘Purito’ Rodríguez has participated in many editions of the Tour of the Basque Country. The Catalan won the Itzulia of the year 2015. A test … in which, because it is celebrated in April, rain usually makes an appearance. It is common for the race to be wet. In one of the many editions that he has competed in Itzulia, ‘Purito’ has a funny anecdote regarding the rain and his glasses.
The cyclist has recalled some funny moments from his career on the Purociclismo podcast. What happened in Itzulia happened in Eibar. At the start of a stage, where “it was raining heavily,” he explains. ‘Purito”s glasses were “fogging up” and he asked his assistant to help him. He cleaned them in every way possible. However, to their surprise, a man gave them advice to prevent them from getting tarnished. “You have to hit it with a potato.” So the runner’s assistant did not hesitate and listened to him.
“It was the biggest stupid thing that ever happened to me,” said the cyclist, who explained that, when he “didn’t see anything” with those glasses, he threw them away. “They were going to fuck us,” he recalls, laughing.
An Internet user has commented on this video, in which he maintains that the potato is “used to make water run over car windows and improve visibility”, but that for “fogging it does not work.”
An explanation that another Instagram user disagrees with. “On the contrary, the potato works for what they explain in the video,” he says while adding that “it occurs inside the car window.”
