A Ligue 1 legend was celebrated at the Parc des Princes this Sunday. On the sidelines of the Paris derby between PSG and Paris FC, spectators, players and officials observed a minute of applause to honor the memory of Jean-Louis Gasset.
The coach, who played twice for PSG, died on December 26, 2025, at the age of 72. After a ten-year career in Ligue 1, the midfielder turned to coaching. Which led him on the path to PSG in 2001.
Five seasons as assistant in Paris
So in Caen, the Montpellier native was poached by Luis Fernandez, who wanted him as an assistant. He stayed there for two seasons, before returning in 2013. After three years on the Blues bench, alongside Laurent Blanc, the duo will remain on the Parisian bench for three seasons.
Under their aegis, PSG won almost all possible national titles, without managing to take a step forward in the Champions League. In three appearances, their team has never managed to get past the quarter-finals.
Gasset then scoured the banks, from Montpellier to OM, via ASSE, Bordeaux and the Ivory Coast. Before returning, again, to Hérault, where he failed to maintain the MHSC last season.
