Player Potential: Deserving Opportunities

Jaap Stam hopes that Roberto De Zerbi will succeed Ruben Amorim at Manchester United. The former footballer believes that the Italian’s style and philosophy fit perfectly with the club.

“Amorim’s departure was inevitable,” says Stam Covers about the sacking of the Portuguese coach at United. “The performances were not stable and we expected more from him. His system did not always suit the players and the club. We did not see much progress, but that is also the club’s fault. They were convinced of a manager who had success in a completely different competition with completely different football.”

In terms of succession, Stam has a clear picture in mind. “United needs a trainer who wants to play attacking football. The Zerbi would be my choice that best suits that wish.” The Italian is currently a trainer at Olympique Marseille, but has already shown at Brighton & Hove Albion that he can perform in the Premier League.

“I like De Zerbi as a manager and the way he holds the dressing room, his tactics and philosophy in high regard,” Stam continues with his recommendation. “He is clear in his approach and tactically very strong. I hope he gets the opportunity to become a coach at Old Trafford.”
