Maybe you’ve heard of pickleball? It has already been on the news on TV a few times (including news, youth news). Pickleball is a dynamic racket sport with game elements from tennis, badminton and table tennis. The game is played on a court that is similar in size to a doubles badminton court. Yet the sport has its own character and rules. Thanks to the lower ball speed and the compact playing field, pickleball is accessible to young and old. In the Netherlands, the sport is part of the KNLTB. In America, this incredibly fun sport is extremely popular and even much bigger than padel. Former tennis players Steffi Graf and Andre Agassi and many other celebrities are enthusiastic practitioners and promoters.
Pickleball is also gaining more and more ground in Europe and the Netherlands and is being offered at more and more tennis clubs and sports halls. Pickleball is growing rapidly worldwide and there are Olympic ambitions. Work is underway to ensure that pickleball will first be admitted as a demonstration sport at the 2028 or 2032 Games and then as an official sport.
