This summer, Feyenoord coach Robin van Persie took the captaincy from Quinten Timber. The Rotterdam team no longer wanted the midfielder as captain, partly because of his expiring contract. According to Timber, the situation had a major impact, both on and off the field.
“Of course it does something to you, as a person and as a footballer, when you are no longer captain,” says Timber in conversation with De Telegraaf. “It is a huge honor to wear that band. But I quickly put it aside to focus fully on football. That subject is now closed for me.”
Although he no longer wears the band, his role within the selection has not changed, Timber emphasizes. “You get a certain respect within the group and that is not just about that bond. I have continued to do the same for the team,” said the midfielder.
The uncertainty surrounding his contract situation still causes some unrest. It makes it a difficult season for Timber, although he is also trying to get something positive out of it. “I think that such a period gives you a stronger character. And that it will ultimately help me in my further career,” Timber concludes.
