Philipp Max is looking for a new club again. The 32-year-old’s contract with Panathinaikos Athens, which was originally valid until 2027, was terminated early on Wednesday. The 20-time Greek champions officially announced this.

Max moved from Eintracht Frankfurt to Athens in the summer of 2024 for 1 million euros. However, the transfer was not a great success and was, above all, a financial mistake for Panathinaikos. Last season, Max was on the field eleven times and provided one assist, but this season he was not used at all. According to the Greek portal “Sport24”, Max received a salary of around 1.5 million euros for the 18 months – more than 100,000 euros per appearance.

Max has also lost in terms of market value since leaving the Bundesliga – from 2 million euros it went down to 700,000 euros. Nevertheless, the three-time national player is now one of the most valuable German professionals without a club. Only Erik Thommy (31), Robert Voloder (24) and Alexander Hack (32), who are looking for a club after their MLS contracts end at the turn of the year, are rated higher worldwide.
