Osi Umenyiora Coma: NFL Star’s Health Scare

Osi Umenyiora (44) has made a serious health shock public: The former NFL star and two-time Super Bowl champion was in a coma for five days and spent almost a month in the hospital. He said that at the beginning of his show “The Breakdown”which runs in Europe on NFL UK & Ireland. The former New York Giants defensive end spoke on the show about how he was doing during the time – without giving any medical details, but pointing to his abdominal area. At his side: co-host and ex-teammate Jason Bell (47), who visited him in the clinic and supported him during the most difficult phase.

“I was in really, really bad shape”said the 44-year-old. He reported that several friends came by every day, some even traveling from all over the world to see him. Of Jason, he said, “This man here was by my side,” and recalled the moment he woke up from the coma and saw Bell: “I just started crying because I could feel the love.” Doctors later told him his heart rate increased when Jason spoke to him, even though he was still in a coma. Osi publicly thanked everyone who was there “every single day”.
