Vampire horror film “Blood & Sinners” has set a new record for the most Oscar nominations ever with 16 categories. When the nominees for the Oscar gala were announced on the night of March 16, the film was listed in almost all categories on Thursday, including the royal category of “Best Film”. Director Ryan Coogler can also hope for the award for best director.
In the long Oscar history, the classic “All About Eve” from 1950, the “Titanic” blockbuster in 1998 and most recently the film musical “La La Land” (2017) had 14 chances of winning.
Despite rave reviews and its award at Cannes, director Mascha Schilinski’s German drama “Looking Into the Sun” has not been nominated for an Oscar for best international film. The five films competing for this prize at the Oscar gala on the night of March 16th include the family drama “Sentimental Value,” a film in which the successful German producers Maren Ade, Janine Jackowski and Jonas Dornbach were involved.
The story of four girls and women
As was also announced at the Oscar Academy ceremony in Hollywood on Thursday, the Brazilian entry “The Secret Agent” was also selected, making it another co-production with German participation. “Sirat” from Spain and “The Voice of Hind Rajab” from Tunisia also made the list of nominees in the “Best International Film” category. France is competing with “A Simple Accident” by exiled Iranian director Jafar Panahi.
“Looking into the Sun” was on the Oscar pre-selection list, the so-called short list, for the best international film along with 14 other films. The drama tells the story of four girls and women from different eras whose lives mirror each other.
The German-born British composer Max Richter has a chance of winning an Oscar with his music for the drama “Hamnet” by director Chloé Zhao. It was nominated by the Film Academy as one of five candidates in the “Best Film Music” category. In the running are, among others, Ludwig Göransson (“Blood & Sinners”), Jonny Greenwood (“One Battle After Another”) and Alexandre Desplat (“Frankenstein”).
The moving drama “Hamnet” about the Shakespeare family revolves around Agnes (Jessie Buckley) and William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal), who have to come to terms with the early death of their eleven-year-old son Hamnet.
Born in Hamelin, Lower Saxony, Max Richter moved to Great Britain with his parents as a small boy. He has released dozens of soundtracks, including for the films “Waltz With Bashir”, “Die Fremde”, “Lore” and for Volker Schlöndorff’s film adaptation of the novel “Return to Montauk”.
The Oscars will be awarded on March 15th in 24 categories.
