Another downer for Riqui Puig. The former FC Barcelona prodigy has had to undergo new surgery for the cruciate ligament injury he suffered at the end of 2024. The now 26-year-old LA Galaxy midfielder will therefore be sidelined for the entirety of 2026.
The operation was successful. It is the second time that Puig has had to undergo surgery for the injury: he also had surgery at the end of 2024. The medical procedure was performed in Barcelona. Puig now faces a very long rehabilitation.
LA Galaxy reports that the Spaniard is expected to make a full recovery. Puig is focused on the start of the next MLS season, which begins in just over a year. The playmaker suffered the knee injury in December 2024 during the Western Conference Final against Seattle Sounders. Puig provided an assist in that match.
The right-hander has since had to watch 46 matches and many more to come. Puig has been playing for LA Galaxy since mid-2022, which took him over on a free transfer from the then ailing FC Barcelona. The midfielder has 82 games for the Americans to his name. Puig will be in Los Angeles until the end of 2027.
