After the final four of Calabrian five-a-side football, a new commitment for the new Palasport in Stretto, which tomorrow at 6pm will kick off the “Open Week” and the 2026 Italian Indoor Para-Archery Championships.
«It is a historic achievement for our community and a source of profound pride for this Administration» declares the Councilor for Sport Salvatore Pirelli «I express my deepest satisfaction for the delivery of a work which is not only a cutting-edge architectural structure, but a real investment in the human capital of our Lamezia Terme, because it opens the doors of a cutting-edge structure, starting a path of sport, civilization and the breaking down of every barrier.
This new “house of sport” was born with a clear vocation: to be an engine for enhancing the territory. We are giving back to citizens, sports clubs and our young people a modern and functional space, capable of attracting important events and projecting the image of a dynamic city, ready for ambitious challenges. For us, sport is not just competitive competition, but a pillar for the moral and educational training of citizens. After years in which the closure of plants has damaged our social fabric, today we are returning extraordinary potential to the City.
Mayor Murone has made it a priority objective that practicing sports is not a luxury for the few. The Open Week reflects exactly this desire. We wanted to combine the inauguration with a week of “barrier-free” events, precisely to reiterate that access to sport is a precise citizen’s right. Ensuring that children with and without disabilities, the elderly and less well-off groups can try disciplines such as swimming, fencing and archery means breaking down those economic and social barriers that too often exclude our citizens. The week will culminate, on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 January, with the prestigious setting of the 2026 Italian Indoor Para-Archery Championships. For the second time in history, Calabria hosts the highest national paralympic archery competition, and we are proud that Lamezia Terme is the chosen location.
Italian Indoor Para-Archery Championships, 70 athletes competing for the two days in the new Lamezia sports hall
On the occasion of the press conference announcing the initiative, I received a commemorative plaque and this recognition honors and moves me. It is a sign that Lamezia Terme is returning to being a sports capital, projecting itself into a wide-ranging territorial dimension.
As indicated in our government lines, we want to combine major events with the valorization of the territory, our geography and our excellence. Hosting world-class Paralympic champions means offering a renewed and winning image of the City to the rest of the country. To make Lamezia Terme progress it is necessary to aim for modern and functional management of all our facilities, combined with programming that brings sports tourism to our areas. This is the key to the 360 degree development that we promised the Lametini people.
The appointment is for Monday at 6pm for the official ceremony with the lighting of the brazier, a symbolic act that will begin a new era for the sport of Lamezia. I invite all citizens to participate in this moment of celebration, which marks the beginning of a new season of growth and pride for our City.”
New sports hall which, after the two events in January, will still have to resolve the traffic and management issues for a multi-year period of time, also having to provide for methods and fees for use which have not yet been approved.
