Dirk Nowitzki as general manager in the NBA? The German basketball idol can’t imagine that. “The GM role is not an issue for me at the moment,” the Würzburger made clear on the sidelines of the “Berlin Game” between the Orlando Magic and the Memphis Grizzlies.
Things used to look quite different. “I always thought that when I quit, I would immediately go into management with the Mavericks,” explained Nowitzki. After all, as a professional at the NBA Draft (talent distribution) for Dallas, he was always “in the war room and was a little involved in a few things. I thought that was the next step for me. The longer I’ve been out there, I don’t have to say that I’m very interested in it.”
Nowitzki: “I like my life”
After the heavily criticized General Manager Nico Harrison left the Mavericks at the beginning of November 2025, Nowitzki was considered a possible successor candidate in the US media. The 47-year-old is currently working as a TV expert for Prime Video.

“I like my life right now,” says Nowitzki, “where there’s something going on, but I still have a lot of time for the family. And the kids are still quite small.” GMs, on the other hand, have a “full-time job, which is 24/7,” said Nowitzki. (sid/lam)
