Nguyen Thuy Linh Upsets World No. 14 at Indonesia Masters

Nguyen Thuy Linh showed excellent form.

Today (January 22), Nguyen Thuy Linh was considered the underdog against Chiu Pin-chan, the opponent who beat her in the Korea Masters final last November. However, the Vietnamese number one showed impressive form, taking revenge on the Taiwanese number one.

In the first set, Nguyen Thuy Linh and Chiu Pin-chan engaged in a fierce duel, point for point. The Vietnamese number one patiently guided the shuttlecock towards the edge of her opponent’s forehand, waiting for an opening to attack. His persistent and precise play paid off, allowing him to win crucial points and ultimately win 21-17.

Chiu Pin-chan made a great comeback in the second set, taking a four-point lead (8/4) and dominating the match. However, Nguyen Thuy Linh reacted. Unfortunately, a few mistakes from Thuy Linh at the end of the set allowed Chiu Pin-chan to lead 20/18. She then had three chances to close out the set, but failed to make them happen.

Nguyen Thuy Linh brilliantly saved crucial points, leveling at 20-20 before winning the second set 23-21 and winning 2-0 against Chiu Pin-chan. This result allows her to reach the quarter-finals of the women’s singles of the Indonesia Masters badminton tournament. She will face in the quarter-finals the winner of the match between Pitchamon (Thailand, 36th in the world) and Tomoka Miyazaki (Japan, 9th in the world).

The Indonesia Masters 2026 badminton tournament is part of the BWF World Tour Super 500 circuit and offers a total prize pool of US$500,000 (approximately VND13 billion). Prize money for individual champions (men’s singles and women’s singles) is US$37,500 (approximately VND970 million). Only the highest ranked players in the BWF rankings are allowed to participate in this tournament, with Nguyen Thuy Linh being the only representative from Vietnam. By reaching the quarterfinals, Nguyen Thuy Linh will pocket at least US$3,000 (approximately 78 million VND) and gain 5,040 points in the BWF rankings.
