Nguyen Thuy Linh: Indonesia Masters 2026 Quarterfinal Loss

Nguyen Thuy Linh missed the opportunity to beat the world junior badminton champion.

Pitchamon Opatniputh (world number 36), who just turned 19, is Thailand’s biggest young badminton talent. She won gold medals in the women’s team tournament with the Thai badminton team at the 2022 SEA Games in Vietnam and the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia. A highlight of her career was winning the women’s singles title at the 2023 World Junior Badminton Championships in the USA. That is why she will be viewed with great confidence when she takes on Nguyen Thuy Linh (world number 21) in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Indonesia Masters badminton tournament.

The youthful energy of Pitchamon Opatniputh (9 years younger than Nguyen Thuy Linh) was clearly noticeable. The Thai player started strongly and quickly expanded her lead over Nguyen Thuy Linh to 6 points (11/5). However, Nguyen Thuy Linh managed to use her composure and experience, leading to a series of consecutive points and a tie at 13/13, after which she won the first set 21/18.

Pitchamon Opatniputh continued her strong start in the second set, taking a 10-5 lead against Nguyen Thuy Linh. The Vietnamese number one then closed the score and leveled the score at 18-18. Despite repeatedly saving set points from her opponent and having opportunities to win, Nguyen Thuy Linh failed to capitalize on them and lost 24-26, ending the match in a decisive third set.

Nguyen Thuy Linh’s declining physical condition put her at a disadvantage during long rallies, resulting in a regrettable 12-21 defeat to Pitchamon Opatniputh, eventually losing 1-2 after 1 hour and 12 minutes of play.

The 2026 Indonesia Masters badminton tournament is part of the BWF World Tour Super 500 series, with a total prize pool of US$500,000 (approximately VND13 billion). The prize money for the individual champions (men’s and women’s singles) is US$37,500 (approximately VND970 million). Only high-ranking players in the BWF rankings are eligible to participate in this tournament, with Nguyen Thuy Linh being the only representative from Vietnam. By reaching the quarterfinals, Nguyen Thuy Linh will receive a minimum of US$3,000 (approximately VND78 million) in prize money and 5,040 ranking points on the BWF leaderboard.
