The NBA All-Star Game 2018 was the 67th NBA All-Star Game and took place on February 18, 2018 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. For the first time in the history of the All-Star Game, it was not the selection teams from the Eastern Conference and Western Conference that competed against each other, but rather two teams put together by elected team captains.

For the 2018 All-Star Game, the National Basketball Association introduced a new competition format. The two players with the most fan votes, LeBron James and Stephen Curry, were named team captains and put together their own teams regardless of conference affiliation. The aim of the reform was to increase the sporting intensity and attractiveness of the game.[1]

The game was evenly balanced for long stretches. In contrast to many All-Star Games in previous years, a significantly increased defensive intensity could be observed, especially in the fourth quarter. Team LeBron finally prevailed with a narrow score of 148:145.

The decisive factors for the victory were, among other things, important hits from Kevin Durant and a crucial layup from LeBron James shortly before the end of the game.[2]

LeBron James was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. He scored 29 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists and led “Team LeBron” to victory. Donovan Mitchell, who is only 1.88 m tall, won the Slam Dunk Contest. Devin Booker won the three-point contest. Spencer Dinwiddie emerged victorious in the Skills Challenge. In the Rising Stars Challenge, Team World won 155:124 against Team USA, with Bogdan Bogdanovic (26 points) being named MVP.

In the German-language basketball reporting, the new mode was particularly highlighted, in which the captains could put together their own teams regardless of the conference. The pay-TV channel SPORT1 reported on the spectacle and the broadcast of the event for the German audience and presented the All-Star Weekend in detail with side competitions and the game between Team LeBron and Team Stephen.[3]

Goal.com Germany also referred to the event as the NBA’s “annual spectacle” and highlighted that German professionals were not represented among the starters this year, which caused discussion in the German fan community.[4]
