In the final of the Australian Open there will be a generational duel between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz. Who is ex-champion Rafael Nadal rooting for?
The semi-finals of the Australian Open 2026 were tough. Both Carlos Alcaraz (against Alexander Zverev) and Novak Djokovic (against defending champion Jannik Sinner) fought their way into the final in five intense sets.
This constellation leads to a classic dilemma for ex-star Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard spoke to the media in Melbourne about the drama of the two games and the upcoming final.
“It was a great day for all the fans, including me. One of those days that creates lasting memories,” said the 39-year-old, who ended his active career in 2024.
Australian Open: Nadal is torn
“Carlos’ match really had it all. I’m really looking forward to a great final and would love to enjoy a good tennis match between the two.”
Who is the Spaniard keeping his fingers crossed for? Trick question, sure.
“To be honest, I have mixed feelings because my history with Novak is spectacular. We have competed at the highest level for many years and I wish him the best,” Nadal initially said, but avoided a clear answer. Because there is a special story that connects him with Alcaraz.
“If he won, I would be very happy for him. But then again, Carlos is my compatriot and we shared important moments at the Olympics, so I have to support him. Anyway, for me it won’t be a drama, no matter how it ends.”
It is not unusual for Nadal that the 38-year-old Djokovic made it to the final.
“I’m not surprised to see Novak in the final. Why should I be? I would also play if it weren’t for my injuries. It’s very positive for our sport that he stays active and can compete on an equal footing with the young players.”
Djokovic deserves “great respect,” said Nadal. “I see Novak as a great example for everyone of resilience and commitment.”
