Moa Ilar started strongly and had a clear margin for a long time in the 10-kilometer race in classic style in Oberhof.
Across the finish line, she was 20 seconds faster than Jonna Sundling – who snagged third place.
But against the runner-up, Austrian Teresa Stadlober, there was a second drama towards the finish line. But with one kilometer to go, Ilar had a lead of ten seconds – but it was shrinking with each metre.
Ilar: “I thought she would take it”
Stadlober was responsible for a very strong finish and seriously threatened Ilar when she was only 0.7 seconds behind the Swede at the finish line.
– I thought she would take it, she has made an incredibly strong finish and I myself was quite crispy at the end, but it’s nice that it was enough for the victory, says Moa Ilar.
Stadlober himself at first not at all how close it was.
– I only heard “seven” and thought they meant seven seconds. Then I saw on the board that it was 0.7. I really gave it my all in the last kilometer, says the Austrian.
– It was a bit slow at first but the finish was really strong, to make it exciting right to the end. I’m a little sad that it wasn’t enough for the victory.
Third victory for Moa Ilar
The victory is Moa Ilar’s first of the season – and a total of third individual in the World Cup.
– I have three victories and it is less than three seconds in total. So I have to file those seconds and increase them a little. Today I should have tied the bag a little better. I was really exhausted at the end.
It was also double Swedish on the podium with Jonna Sundling in third place.
– It felt surprisingly good. I need to be able to ride classic races too, says Jonna Sundling, who won Saturday’s sprint by far.
All five Swedes finished in the top twelve.
