Milos Raonic has achieved something that his successors (and contemporaries) Félix Auger-Aliassime, Denis Shapovalov and the up-and-coming Gabriel Diallo are still working on: namely reaching a final of a Grand Slam tournament. It was in 2016 when Raonic defeated Roger Federer in the Wimbledon semi-finals. Only to then fail in the big final due to Andy Murray.

From this point of view, what Auger-Aliassime wrote on social media after Raonic’s final retirement was announced is of course correct: “The greatest Canadian to ever play. Thank you for everything you have given to Canadian tennis. And from a personal perspective: Thank you for setting such a great example. And for being my mentor.”

Bianca Andreescu, 2019 US Open champion, summed it up more succinctly: “Canadian legend.”

Novak Djokovic also spoke up. The Serbian grandmaster always had the greatest joy when he spotted Milos Raonic on the other side of the net in the twelve duels against each other. Because the now tennis pensioner didn’t manage a single win against “Nole”. But Raonic congratulated him on his fantastic career.

In the end, Milos Raonic was able to collect eight titles on the ATP tour. However, the last one was a decade ago: it was in Brisbane in 2016.
