The Pittsburgh Steelers intend to hire the Pittsburgh native to replace Mike Tomlin as head coach, a source with knowledge of the matter told The Associated Press.
This person requested anonymity because the deal has not yet been finalized.
The information was initially reported by ESPN.
McCarthy grew up in the Greenfield neighborhood, a few miles from the team’s practice facility on the city’s south side.
At 62 years old, McCarthy has a record of 185 wins, 123 losses and two ties, including the playoffs.
He managed the Green Bay Packers for 13 years and the Dallas Cowboys for five seasons.
Since 1969, the Steelers have had only Tomlin, Chuck Noll and Bill Cowher as head coaches.
Tomlin resigned this month after a 19e season with the Steelers.
It ended with a seventh consecutive playoff defeat, this time at home, against the Houston Texans.
