Nick Kyrgios lost in round one to Aleksandar Kovacevic at the ATP Tour 250 tournament in Brisbane. No wonder after the long break.

Nothing comes from nothing – and match practice in particular cannot be replaced in professional tennis. Maybe that’s why Taylor Fritz is struggling through the United Cup, even though his knee urgently requires a break. But the American has played (and won) many matches in recent years, building up a great level of competitive toughness.
Nick Kyrgios is definitely missing this at the moment. Which is no surprise. With the exception of the strange meeting with Aryna Sabalenka in Dubai a few days ago, the Australian has not taken part in any competition. The 3:6 and 4:6 against Aleksandar Kovacevic at the start in Brisbane was, as expected, clear.
Kyrgios started successfully in doubles
Will this still happen at the Australian Open, where Kyrgios would need a wildcard to start in the singles? One gets the impression: Kyrgios doesn’t really know himself. At least he is receiving encouragement from some colleagues like Daniil Medvedev, who is ranked number one in Brisbane. “I actually just spoke to Medvedev in the locker room,” Kyrgios said on Tuesday. “And he told me that’s just how it is when you only play a match here and there. Things don’t always go the way you imagine.”
But he wants to build on the performance in Brisbane, Kyrgios continued. Not just for the Australian Open, but possibly for the whole year. “Whatever that brings me.” Overall it should be easier in doubles. Kyrgios started the 2026 season successfully with his friend Thanasi Kokkinakis.
