Skiing accident: Matthäus needs shoulder surgery
Lothar Matthäus reports how he had a serious fall on the last descent of a short trip on skis. The football legend also missed a stint as a TV expert because of an operation.
Football legend Lothar Matthäus injured himself in a fall on skis. He has to undergo shoulder surgery, as the 64-year-old told “Bild”. When Matthäus returned to Munich, the former Bayern team doctor Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt diagnosed, among other things, a double torn ligament.
“I also bruised my ribs on the right side, which is of course painful. And I wear my right arm in a sling. But overall I’m doing well. What’s important now is the quick operation, which is probably not a major procedure,” Matthäus was quoted as saying by “Bild”. The record national player could not initially be reached when asked by dpa.
No use on TV on Thursday evenings
Matthäus described the accident: “It was the last descent on the last day of vacation. The slope was icy and wavy. I was already looking forward to lunch at the hut – then I suddenly fell on the right side. I didn’t catch a wave properly, the skis jammed.” The problem was therefore the ice.
The 1990 world champion is unavailable for the planned assignment as an RTL expert on Thursday evening at the Europa League game AS Roma against VfB Stuttgart, as the broadcaster confirmed. The football great is to undergo surgery in a Munich hospital after his fall in Austria. Matthäus said he believes in a timely return after the operation.
Matthäus not only works for RTL, but also regularly for the pay TV channel Sky. There he will be used as an expert, especially in the top Bundesliga games on Saturday evening.
