Roberto De Zerbi is under great pressure bee Olympic Marseille. According to RMC Sport the Italian coach is seriously at risk of being fired after the club’s dramatic elimination in the UEFA Champions League. Quinten Timber, who recently exchanged Feyenoord for Marseille, may soon get a new trainer.
After the 3-0 defeat to Liverpool last week, Marseille seemed to have good credentials to join the best 24 teams and advance to the play-offs. According to statistics from Opta, the French club even had a 94 percent chance of advancing before the decisive match against Club Brugge. However, that hope disappeared completely in Belgium. Marseille lost 3-0 to Club Brugge, while Benfica won 4-2 against Real Madrid. Due to this combination of results, OM just missed out and finished 25th, one place below the line.
RMC Sport reports that discussions are now underway between all parties involved about the future of De Zerbi in the Stade Vélodrome. Although Marseille is still third in the competition, seven points behind leader Paris Saint-Germain, the European elimination seems to weigh heavily in the trainer’s assessment. It is not yet clear whether De Zerbi will actually lose his job, but according to the medium his position is ‘anything but certain’.
If De Zerbi has to leave the field in Marseille, it will soon mean a big twist for Quinten Timber. The Dutch international recently switched from Feyenoord to Marseille. Dutch goalkeeper Jeffrey de Lange is also active in the French port city, as is former Feyenoord player Igor Paixão.
