Markkleeberg Championships: Saxony Athletes Shine

Last weekend the Southeast German Active Championships took place in Markkleeberg. Numerous Saxon players took the opportunity to compete with the best athletes from Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.

TSV 1886 Markkleeberg, which already impressed as host in 2023, presented itself as a reliable host again this year. After the ceremonial opening, which was attended by Markkleeberg’s mayor Karsten Schütze, among others, the club ensured a smooth and well-organized process on both days of the competition and provided the players with extensive and rich catering. In addition, the weekend was used to refresh the refereeing skills so that the majority of the games could be supervised by referees. The semi-final and final games on Sunday were also accompanied by service judges. This created optimal conditions for an exciting and successful competition weekend.

The Saxon athletes also knew how to impress in terms of sport. Compared to previous years, many players showed a significant increase in performance, which was reflected in numerous quarter-finals and podium finishes. Among other things, the following quarter-finals could be celebrated:

Mixed-Doppel:
Pit Hofmann / Sidonie Krüger (TSV Niederwürschnitz / SG Gittersee)
Wilhelm Büchner / Paula-Elisabeth Nitschke (HSG DHfK Leipzig)

Herreneinzel:
Wilhelm Büchner (HSG DHfK Leipzig), Pit Hofmann (TSV Niederwürschnitz)

Ladies single:
Sidonie Krüger (SG Gridsee), Luisa Schubert (TSV 1886 Markkleeberg), Paula-Elisabeth Nitschke (HSG DHfK Leipzig)

Ladies Double:
Nla Blotenkia / Sidony Krüger (SG Robur Zitau / SG Gitteree)
Chantal-Josephine Bensch / Lotte Land (SG Gridsee / HSG DHfK Leipzig)
Hannah Berge / Paula-Elisabeth Nitschke (HSG DHfK Leipzig)

But it wasn’t just the quarter-finals that ensured Saxon moments of success. With a strong performance, Pit Hofmann made it to the semi-finals in the men’s singles, but had to admit defeat to David Kramer (SG Schorndorf). Leipzig’s Hannah Berge and Paula-Elisabeth Nitschke also fought their way to the final, but lost to the first-place pairing Lena Reder / Aurelia Wulandoko (BC Offenburg / TSV Freystadt).

Paula-Elisabeth Nitschke set the sporting highlight in the women’s singles: After an exciting three-set game, she was crowned Southeast German champion and thus won this title for the first time since 2013, which Nicole Bartsch had won back then.

Thanks to these strong performances, numerous Saxon athletes qualified for the German Championships, which will be held from January 29th to February 1st, 2026 in Cloppenburg (Lower Saxony).
