Mark Obermeier Wins Badminton BW Championships

The player, who has been starting for BC Offenburg this season, won the men’s singles title at the active state championships of the Bavaria, Saxony and Baden-Württemberg associations.

Obermeier moved from BC Eimeldingen to BC Offenburg for the new season in order to play in the 2nd Bundesliga. This success is particularly remarkable because he was able to defeat the number one and number two seeded players David Kramer (SG Schorndorf) and Steffen Grün (TV Marktheidenfeld) during the tournament.

Obermeier competed in two disciplines in Markkleeberg – singles and doubles together with Moritz Miller (TSV 1906 Freystadt).

In doubles, the duo initially presented themselves confidently and won the two opening games safely. In the quarter-finals, however, the final stop was against the third-seeded pairing of Niklas Ditter (BSV Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen) and Florian Winniger (SG Schorndorf). With 14:21 and 14:21 Obermeier/Miller had to clearly admit defeat.

In the individual, however, Obermeier really picked up speed in a strong main field of 64. An extremely demanding opponent was already waiting in the round of 16 with Tim Specht (TV Marktheidenfeld). In a high-class and competitive match, Obermeier narrowly prevailed with 21:18, 24:26 and 21:18. In the quarterfinals he had a surprisingly clear success against doubles partner Moritz Miller, whom he defeated 21:17 and 21:6 and thus secured a place on the podium.

In the semifinals, Obermeier met Steffen Grün, the number two seed. After losing the first set, the Neu-Offenburger showed great mental strength and turned the game in his favor with 21:19 and 21:13.

In the final there was finally a repeat of the final of the Baden-Württemberg Championships from December against top favorite David Kramer – at that time with the better end for Kramer. This time it was a highly dramatic three-set thriller in which Obermeier fended off several match points and showed great fighting spirit. With 16:21, 26:24 and 21:17 he finally crowned his strong tournament performance by winning the title.
