Mario Zago: Remembering an Italian Baseball Star

The first home run on the diamond in Via Persicara, the blue shirt of the junior team playing in Latina against the Netherlands, the successes with the capital’s team that made the world tremble.
I was a great admirer and fan of his, a player like Mario Zago is impossible to forget. His friend Mauro Corbi, a former baseball player, remembered him today on Facebook: “This photo, redefined in detail, improved in detail and recoloured, portrays a true phenomenon of Latin baseball, an athlete who could have had his say on the international field. He had uncommon abilities and in his short but intense progress on the fields throughout Italy, he had impressed all those who had met him as an opponent and those who admired his athletic exploits from the stands. We, his teammates, were used to to those instinctive, fast and precise gestures of his which nevertheless continued to amaze us because for him, Mario Zago, they succeeded with disarming simplicity. It was a Sunday in 1978 when during a morning match he began to suffer from illness. In the afternoon he did not play the second match and from that Sunday onwards we never saw him step on the green grass of the playing fields. On January 1st 1979, at just nineteen years old, in the early morning, he left us, because they were certainly needed in heaven. of a good shortstop, of someone who had made his imagination the norm.”
