Marcus Gideon’s Father: Badminton Star Mourns Loss

Marcus Gideon’s father, Kurniahu, died on Thursday (29/1). Kurniahu is also a legendary former badminton player and coach in Indonesia.

This sad news was conveyed by the official Gideon Badminton Academy account. Kurniahu died at the age of 66.

“The extended Gideon Badminton Academy family expresses deep condolences for the death of Mr. Kurniahu Tjio Kay Kie, founder and supervisor of Gideon Badminton Academy.”

“Hopefully the deceased will find the best place next to God Almighty, and the family left behind will be given strength, fortitude and consolation,” wrote Gideon Badminton Academy.

Kurniahu was a player from the late 70s and 80s who often competed on the international stage. After that, Kurniahu became a coach and developed players at the Tangkas club. Kurniahu and produced many great players from PB Tangkas.

Kurniahu is also the father of Marcus Gideon. Since Marcus was little, Kurniahu encouraged Marcus to become a badminton player.

Kurniahu also gave up Marcus to go to school in Singapore while continuing to pursue badminton. However, at that time the goal was no longer achievements at the international level.

After Marcus didn’t feel at home in Singapore and returned to Indonesia, Marcus received direct guidance from Kurniahu. Marcus then managed to enter the Cipayung National Training Center and could become the world’s number one player when paired with Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo.
